Your first acupuncture visit can be intimidating, if you have never gone through the process before. Most people have some reservations about getting dozens of needles stuck into their body—even if they understand the massive health benefits that acupuncture treatment can bring! Here at Dr. Lee’s Health and Wellness Centre in Waterloo, we want to ensure you know what to expect during your first acupuncture visit & what to expect after acupuncture.
Main Assessment
Acupuncture patients follow the same intake process as any of our other patients. There will be new patient forms you have to fill out and a health history to complete, to help us understand how we can best support you!
Once these forms are filled out, there will be a 1 hour session with Dr. Lee or one of his associates to assess your current health condition and to determine the focus of your treatment.
This session is an open conversation. We encourage you to share any personal health goals you may have or bring up medical issues that you would like us to focus on fixing with acupuncture or acupressure. Our aim is to have a dialogue with you about how we can best help you and your body. As your ‘body mechanic’, we will make recommendations based on what we observe—but the direction of the acupuncture treatment is under your control.
Follow-Up Acupuncture Sessions
After your assessment, there will be 6 initial sessions. In each acupuncture session, we will use needles to stimulate meridians or different pressure points to promote healing within your body. We don’t leave the acupuncture needles for more than 20 minutes. Longer sessions or too many sessions can lead to an overstimulation of the body.
Clients often ask about acupuncture side effects. Acupuncture can cause feelings of fatigue or soreness. If you experience any pain after acupuncture, please let Dr. Lee know in your next session. He will be able to adjust the course of your treatment accordingly.
What can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture benefits a variety of conditions. The process is similar to doing a hard reset on your body, similar to pressing the restart button on your computer. Acupuncture treatment can help get you past stubborn conditions like plantar fasciitis, runner’s knee, shin splints or rotator cuff issues. Often we use acupuncture therapy in combination with other forms of therapy, to treat a range of chronic health issues.
